CUE Equity in Faculty Hiring Training
In spring 2018, 100 Los Rios representatives attended an Equity in Faculty Hiring Institute, hosted by the USC Center for Urban Education (CUE). To increase racial equity in the hiring process, CUE finds that structural, political, human, and cultural factors must all be addressed. CUE encourages starting with the material aspects of hiring, such as the content of the job announcement, the questions asked of candidates, and the assessment criteria. At Los Rios, we have already begun work incorporating changes in these areas to increase equity and diversity.
The fall 2019 Institute on Equity in Faculty Hiring was tailored for California community colleges committed to faculty diversity and integrating a practice of equity-mindedness among practitioners on their campuses. Participants walked away with a set of practices and processes on how to embed equity-mindedness into the faculty hiring process.
The Los Rios colleges are poised to hire an unprecedented number of faculty members during the next two academic years. These hiring decisions will have an impact on student success and campus culture and should reflect the demographic changes occurring across California.
