How It Works

Benefits

  • Earn Flex or College Service Credit for your work remediating and/or creating accessible content

Flex Credit

For those required to complete Flex hours, your work on remediating and creating accessible content can count towards your unscheduled Flex hours! While some scheduled Flex hours are for Convocation and area/department meetings (prior to the start of each semester), your other hours are for activities that you select and that occur outside of your teaching schedule. Individual Flex activities may be done any time during the fiscal year from July 1 through June 30 (according to Title 5, section 55724,5).

To receive Flex credit for your work, keep track of the hours you spend working with your UDA Coordinator, as well as the hours you spend working on remediating and creating accessible course content. Then when you report your Flex hours for this activity, you will record them as "Universal Design and Accessibility Work" under "Other" activities using your college’s regular Flex recording system.

If you need assistance in recording these hours, contact your local college professional development coordinator.

College Service Credit

Alternatively, a full-time faculty member's work on remediating and creating accessible content can count towards College Service if the work is done during the fall or spring semester. The LRCFT contract explains that College Service must be performed during a semester. Section 4.7.2 of the LRCFT contract indicates that an average of five hours a week of College Service over the course of the fall and spring semesters is required of all full-time faculty.

In addition, section 4.7.2.1 of the LRCFT contract states, "College Service is directed and scheduled by the individual faculty member and the allotted time may accordingly vary over the semester." So your accessibility work can count towards your College Service hours.

Be sure to keep track of your work to include in your self-study when your peer review comes due.

Note: While you can “mix and match” by counting some of your accessibility work as Flex (for example work done in summer) and some as College Service, it is never permissible to double count the same hours as both Flex and College Service.
