The district has planned a series of virtual training sessions for employees on how to respond if US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) appears on campus.

These sessions will cover your rights, student rights, and the steps to take to protect yourself and others. The training will guide students, faculty, staff, and managers on how to respond calmly and confidently while understanding your rights.

Mary T. Hernandez and Katie Riggs from the Garcia Hernandez and Sawhney law firm will present with Los Rios Police Chief Harvey Woo on this important topic. Los Rios Interim Chief Counsel Peter Khang will facilitate.

Ms. Hernandez serves as outside general counsel to various school districts and nonprofit organizations throughout California. She is a lifelong public interest advocate and has served in various public service roles, including President of the Hispanic National Bar Association and the Board of Education for the San Francisco Unified School District.

Ms. Riggs is a retired senior attorney at the US Department of Education Office of Civil Rights. She has dedicated her legal career to defending the rights of employees, students, and teachers. Ms. Riggs' extensive litigation experience includes representing various teachers’ unions in state and federal litigation to defend teachers' rights.

The sessions will be recorded and available for those unable to attend.

As a reminder, if you see immigration officials on campus, call the Los Rios Police Department (LRPD) immediately at (916) 558-2221 (or extension 2221 from campus phones) or use the SAFE Los Rios mobile app. Per district policy – adopted in alignment with the California Value Act (SB 54) – no Los Rios law enforcement resources will be used for immigration enforcement or information-gathering activities.

If you have any non-immediate questions about what to do or how to handle a situation, please email immigration@losrios.edu.
